Thomas Hirschhorn
Born in Bern in 1957. Lives and works in Aubervilliers.
Through the use of simple materials, Thomas Hirschorn inscribes his work in the public space, by-passing the cultural monopoly of the places dedicated to art. In this way he militates for a more egalitarian access to culture. For That which comes, Thomas Hirschorn will repeat part of the Theatre-Spinoza experiment which was carried out in Amsterdam in 2009, the Precarious Theatre. This entails taking over a local property – empty and not identified as a cultural space – in an area of Rennes and exhibiting sculptures produced by the artist for the occasion. This exhibition will be regularly activated, being transformed into a theatre where the actors are inhabitants from the surrounding neighbourhood. He encourages the inhabitants to take action on something they hold in common – their neighbourhood – transforming both the property and themselves into a community. Theatre then takes over from the exhibition which becomes the scene for the play. This will be specially written by Manuel Joseph for six characters. Thomas Hirschorn offers a reinterpretative approach to precariousness as a form of resistance to habits and to the institutionalisation of social contacts. Within the fragility of the forms, the words and gestures that bring this theatre to life, within their ephemerality can also be found their saliency and in this way, their active power.
